Introduction to
Dental Insurance - One thing is for sure, hardly anyone likes a trip to
the dentist, that is of course if we can find one to treat us, the
availability of National Health dental treatment is becoming harder and harder
to find. At the present moment, nearly 5 million people a year in the United
Kingdom are visiting their dentist complaining about tooth ache. One of
the major causes of this is the fact that we do not have enough dental check
ups-less than half the population have a frequent dental checkups, and 12
percent of the population haven’t been for more than two years. So what keeps
us from visiting the dentist, is it the fear of pain or more likely we are
frightened of the costs involved. The cost of dental treatment is also
very expensive particularly if we have been unfortunate enough to have
suffered a dental accident ( something that hardly anyone considers). If you
have an accident particularly a sports accident, you may find that the cost of
repair work to your teeth runs in to several thousands of pounds.
Cover Available - Dental Insurance does exist from a variety of
Insurance companies and it may be worth while obtaining a quotation from a
number of different sources to compare the various covers on offer. Certainly
if you play amateur sports, this is a material fact and you should disclose it
to the insurer to make sure that you are adequately covered. One of the most
annoying aspects of National Health Dental treatment is the sheer
inconvenience of having to be treated at a time convenient for the dental
surgery, you should find with private dentist insurance that you are able to
be treated when it suits you.
Types of Cover - amongst the covers on offer you should find the
following;
-
An amount up to
usually £25,000 in respect of a dental accident per policy term with a lower
limit per incident. If you play amateur sports, you should, make sure that any
policy you buy will cover you for dentistry following a sporting accident.
-
A amount for
emergency treatment including a lower amount if you are abroad on holiday.
-
An amount for
Dentist call out charges if you need a dentist to call and see you.
-
An amount per annum
if you have to spend time in hospital under the care of a dental surgeon.
-
An amount of up to
£25,000 if after a check up with a dentist, your are diagnosed as having oral
cancer.
Help Hints -
Usually with dental insurance there is no waiting period before cover can
commence, but of course any pre existing dental work or work that you had
planned before the policy was taken out will be excluded. It pays to shop
around for your Dentistry insurance, always check the policy wording before
you buy to make sure that the cover on offer suits your needs. Apart
from Unforeseen accidents to teeth, it is probably best to have a good regime
in place to keep your teeth in good condition. Tooth decay is
almost always caused by the germs (plaque) which live on your teeth.
They turn the sugar found in the food we eat ( and drinks) into acid. This
acid then attaches itself to the tooth surface and the process of decay
starts. It is important if possible to clean your teeth after every meal or at
least twice a day. Regular dental check-ups will ensure your teeth and
gums stay healthy and can help early detection of diseases like cancer but
only around 50% of people in Britain visit their dentists regularly.
Dentistry Insurance should been seen as a means of complimenting a good oral
hygiene regime not a way of replacing it.
