Restaurant & Take Away Restaurant Insurance - Most Restaurant Insurance or Business Catering Insurance is bought on a package basis, the type of Restaurant is academic, it makes no difference if you are apply for Indian Restaurant Insurance, Chinese Restaurant Insurance or what ever. However, one of the main underwriting considerations is the type of Frying (if any that occurs at the premises. Restaurants without frying attract the better rates, followed by small basket frying types with the floor standing fryers and ranges attracting the largest premiums.

However most insurers do distinguish between Restaurants and a Take Away. In some cases an element of Take Way will be allowed with an additional premium loading, as most Restaurants will provide a Take Away service. The usual ratio is 70-30 in favour of the Restaurant side of the business over the Take Way Restaurant side.  The reason for this is usually that insurers statistics show that a Take Way produce a greater amount of claims especially on the Public Liability side.  Anyone that’s visited a Take Away late at night will testify to the fact that they can be quite lively places.

Insurance for a Take Away restaurant is available but the premiums tend to be higher. At the highest end of the scale comes Fish & Chip Shop Insurance where the highest premiums are charged.  When you buy your Restaurant or Take Away Insurance it is important to read the contract wording fully, as well as the usual terms and conditions relating to the protections of the business, the insurers will have placed certain warranties on to the contract with regard to the up keep of the premises and the equipment. This is mainly done to prevent fires, which are the biggest source of claims.

When a premise has Frying equipment; a usual type of endorsement would sate that the frying apparatus within the Premises is securely fixed and free from contact with any combustible materials.  It would also require that the equipment is fitted with a thermostat which prevents the temperature of fat or oil exceeding 205ºC (401 ºF). It would also require that exhaust hoods canopies filters and flues are cleared at least once each month and extraction ducts are cleared at least once every six months and deposits of grease or oil are not allowed to accumulate.

In addition to the above you would also be required to have, a fire extinguisher suitable for use on fat or oil fires and a fire blanket.  Most policies will also state that your equipment is subject to an annual maintenance check and that you maintain a contract for this service.  Make sure that you comply with any warranties under your policy as you may find your claim refused if you do not.

This type of Insurance is readily available from Brokers and insurers and the covers on offer are very similar to those on offer under the Shop package contract.  Other extensions to a normal Package policy will include Frozen Food Insurance and possibly loss of licence cover if the Restaurant has a drinks licence.  The standard covers under a Restaurant/ Take Away package policy are normally as follows;

  • Buildings

  • Contents

  • Stock

  • Business Interruption

  • Money

  • Public/ Products Liability

  • Employers Liability

  • Frozen Foods

  • Loss of Licence

  • Legal Expenses

Some of these covers may be optional depending on the package policy that you obtain.
