Car Insurance -
What is Covered? - All car insurance policies will be different but the
basic sections will be the same.
Third Party
section, Legal Liabilities to Third Parties - The policy covers you for
all sums that you become legally liable to pay for in respect of death of or
injury to any person and damage to any other person's property as a result of
an accident involving your Car detailed in the current Certificate of Motor
Insurance and your policy schedule. The insurance policy cover
will extend to other persons named in the schedule or to Any Licensed Driver
if you have an Any Licensed Driver policy. This section will also be
extended to cover any other car that you only might be driving providing that
your certificate of motor insurance says you may do so. The cover in respect
of other cars is Third Party only insurance cover. This section of the
policy will also apply whilst a trailer or disabled mechanically propelled
vehicle is attached to your vehicle. There is no cover for loss of or damage
to that trailer or disabled mechanically propelled vehicle. This section
of the policy will also cover sums that you are Legally Liable for in respect
of passengers. This section will also usually cover you for the following
providing of course that you have the insurers permission;
Solicitors' fees if anyone insured under the insurance policy is represented
at a coroner's inquest or fatal accident inquiry or is defending any
proceedings in a high court or above; or Legal services to defend anyone
insured under the policy in the event of legal proceedings being issued in
respect of manslaughter, reckless or dangerous driving causing death.
The insurers will also usually consider other costs with their written
permission. If your policy has been extended to include business use and
you were using the car for business at the time of the accident, then the
policy will be extended to cover your employer.
If you make a claim under this section and it is only in respect of Emergency
Treatment, ie that provided by an ambulance crew or a hospital then usually,
your no claim bonus will not be reduced. The sum insured under this
section of the policy is unlimited except for Third Party property damage
which is limited to £20,000,000.
Fire & Theft Insurance - This section of your car insurance policy will
pay for loss of or damage to your Car, and its accessories and spare parts
while they are fixed to or in it or on it or in your private garage, caused by
fire, theft, or attempted theft. Loss or damage to Your Car under this part of
the policy is also covered whilst the vehicle is with a member of the motor
trade for its overhaul or repair, service etc. If your Car is undrivable as
the result of damage covered by this part of the policy most insurers will pay
the reasonable costs in taking it from the scene of the incident to the
nearest competent repairer. After repairs insurers will usually pay the
reasonable cost of delivering it to your address in the United Kingdom.
If your car is under 12 months old at the time of a claim, your insurers may
offer to buy you brand new car. Their will be exclusions under this
section of your car insurance policy which will usually include:-
-
Loss of value, wear
and tear, or mechanical, electrical, electronic or computer failure or
breakdown.
-
Theft, or attempted
theft, of your car if Your car keys are left in or on Your Car. ( leaving the
keys in the car at a petrol station is a common mistake).
-
Theft, or attempted
theft, that involves somebody lying to get to your Car.
-
Any reduction in
the value of Your Car as a result of it having been repaired.
-
Confiscation or
requisition or destruction by or under order of any Government or Public or
Local Authority. This can some times happen if you have been using your
vehicle for any illegal activity or had left it illegally parked or without a
valid tax disc.
Accidental
Damage Insurance ( The Comprehensive section) - Your insurers will pay for
accidental damage to your car and all of it’s accessories and spare parts
while they are fixed to it or in it or in Your private garage, unless of
course a claim can be entered under the above Fire & Theft section. Your
Car under this part of the policy will also be covered whilst it is with a
member of the motor trade for its upkeep, overhaul or repair. If Your
Car is undrivable as the result of damage covered by this part of the policy
the insurers will usually pay the reasonable cost of taking it from the scene
of the incident to the nearest competent repairer. After the repairs have been
completed, your insurers will normally pay the reasonable cost of delivering
it to your home address in the United Kingdom. If you car is a write off
and under 12 months old, most insurers will offer to buy you a new car. As per
the above section, there will be exclusions, these usually include:-
-
Any loss of value,
wear and tear, mechanical, electrical, electronic or computer failure or
breakdown, loss of use of your vehicle, Damage that occurs if the car keys are
left in or on the vehicle, damage to tyres by braking, punctures, cuts or
bursts.
-
Any reduction in
the value of Your Car as a result of it having been repaired.
-
Also under the
Comprehensive section of your motor insurance policy, you should have cover
for
-
Windscreen - if
your Windscreen glass sunroof or windows are broken, then your insurers will
pay for the cost of replacement. If any paintwork was damaged at the same time
then this will also be repaired. If there is no other damage, you will not
usually be deducted any no claims bonus
This section of the
policy will also usually include the following minor covers Personal
Belongings, Personal Accident and Medical Expenses. Your policy will
only pay out if you are abiding by all of the terms and conditions of the
policy. Always make sure that you have disclosed all of the relevant
information to your insurers and the policy you have received covers
everything you expect it to . Check your car insurance policy as soon as
received, don’t wait for a claim to happen If you are involved in an
accident and it is not your fault, you may find that anything that is not
covered by your own insurance policy can be recovered from the Third Party as
part of an uninsured loss claim. If you have a motorist legal protection
policy, a solicitor or claims bureau will normally be appointed to handle this
for you.
