Introduction - One of the best ways to obtain a
discount on motor insurance is to fit additional security devices to your car.
The majority of cars come fitted with the manufactures own security device and
some times it is difficult to know what exactly has been fitted to the vehicle.
We hope the following list may help you understand some of the terminology
relating to vehicle security. Ask you insurers if they will consider giving you
a discount from your car insurance policy if you fit additional security. They
will want to know exactly the type of device that has been fitted to your
vehicle, and by whom. In all probability, they will ask to see documentary proof
before giving you a discount from your car insurance.
The main security devices and features include:-
-
DIY Security Markings - As the owner of the vehicle
you can choose to mark the vehicle with your name and address or postcode and
hide this, inside door skins, under the seat frames etc. You can use dymo
tape, ultraviolet pens cards or similar. This will help identify your vehicle
if it is stolen.
-
Mechanical- these will lock the steering wheel, gear
lever or pedals in position.
-
Electronic These disable the vehicles electrical system
and engine.
